Frederick Cyril Nugent Hicks (1872–1942) was an Anglican bishop and author who served as Bishop of Gibraltar from 1927 to 1933, during which time he was appointed as Sub-Prelate of the Order of St John of Jerusalem.〔''Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem'' in ''The Times'' Saturday, 23 June 1928; p. 17; Issue 44927; col D〕 He was Bishop of Lincoln for fifteen years in the middle of the 20th century.〔''Obituary-The Rt Rev FCN Hicks'', in ''The Times'' dated Thursday, 12 February 1942; p. 7; Issue 49158; col D〕 Born on 28 June 1872, Hicks was educated at Wixenford,〔Maurice Francis Headlam, ''Bishop and friend: Nugent Hicks, sixty-fourth bishop of Lincoln'' (1945), p. 17〕 Harrow, and Balliol College, Oxford, before his ordination in 1897.〔Who was Who 1987-1990: London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕 From then until 1909 he was successively Lecturer, Tutor, and Dean of Keble College, Oxford. In 1909 he was appointed Principal of Bishops’ College, Cheshunt, after which he was Rector of Toddington, West Sussex, and Rural Dean of Brighton, before his elevation to the episcopate.
